1. Term of Reference
Deemed of the urgency to safeguard national memory heritage and to organize these heritage for the easy access of users and admirers according to the advise of UNESCO, again on 31st October 2005 the Minister of Education had appointed the Thai National Committee on Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO. Professor Khunying Maenmas Chavalit the past Director of the National Library of Thailand, Deputy Director General Fine Arts Department, Adviser of the Department of Education Technique of the Ministry of Education and the present President of The Thai Library Association under the Patronage of the Princess Maha Chakri Siridhorn become the President of the Committee once again.
2. Membership
The Thai National Committee on the Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO composes of the Advisory Committee Members and the Committee Members. Members of the Advisory Committee are the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Professor Adul Vichiancharoen and Secretary General Thai National Commission for UNESCO. Committee Members are Professor Khunying Maenmas Chavalit the President, the Director General of the Fine Arts Department Vice President and Dr. Prachark Wattananusit Senior Librarian of the National Library of Thailand the Secretary, Members of the Committee are Professor Presert Na Nagara renown scholar, Mrs. Savitri Suwansathit the past Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, M.R. Dr. Rujaya Abhakorn historian, Miss Kongkaew Veeraprajak, Mr.Term Meetem Oriental language experts, Miss Khanittha Wongpanit Archivist, Director of the National Electronic and Computer Technology Center, Director of the National Library of Thailand, Director of the National Archives of Thailand, Director of Siridhorn Anthropology Center, the representation of the Thai National Committee for UNESCO while Miss Korapin Taweta of the National Archives of Thailand and Miss Vilasinee Tabungkarn are Assistant Secretaries.
3. Activities
3.1 Meeting
The Secretariat organized the monthly meeting of the Thai National Committee on MOW of UNESCO. Up to date there are already 10 Meetings. Topics and issues during the meeting are usually concern the conservation and preservation of the national document heritage, the national document collections, the preparing of list, the national network of conservation and preservation, prominent and valuable documents and the selection of some National Seminar.
3.2 Important documents
Some important documents closely examined and studied by the Thai Committee are
1. Thai Laws and Proclamations on the Abolition of Slavery published in the Ratchakitchanubiksa ( Royal Gazette ) 1874 – 1911
2. Inscriptions of Wat Raja Orasoram on traditional phamacy
3. The Royal Proclamation on the Prohibition of Opium Smoking in the Rign of King Rama IV Bangkok Period
4. Literature on Tri Bhumi or three worlds the Buddhist cosmology of Sukhothai Period
5. Archival documents on the national administration reform in the Reign of King Chulalongkorn or Rama V of Bangkok period.
6. Rare manuscripts of provinces especially northern Thailand and northeastern Thailand.
7. Inscriptions of Wat Pra Chetupon Wimolmangalaram or Wat Pho
3.3 Project Promotion Publication
In 2003 the National Commission for UNESCO of Thailand had dedicated whole copies of its bulletin vol.35 no 3 July – September 2003 to this Programme. Articles in the copy were the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme, Meetings of the International Advisory Board, Rules for selection on preserving and contributing the world heritage documents, the Memory of the World Programme and Thailand, the Dissemination of Knowledge about the King Ram Khamhaeng Inscription, the King Ram Khamhaeng Inscription and the article on the Important Contents of the King Ram Khamhaeng Inscription.
3.4 Thai MOW Website
Website of Thai MOW is now being prepared by the Committee with the cooperation of the National Library of Thailand and the National Electronic an Computer Technology Center. It is hoped to be operate very soon,
3.5 The Preparation of the 2nd National Seminar on the Promotion of the Thai MOW Programme on “Values of Wat Pra Chetupon or Wat Pho Inscriptions”
With the very kind cooperation and support of the Wat Pra Chetupon or Wat Pho a Buddhist temple and monastery, the Thai National MOW Programme Committee is organizing the 2nd National Seminar on the above mentioned topic supposed to take place at the Wat Pra Chetupon or Wat Pho in Bangkok during February 2007. This Temple and Monastery was constructed in the Reign, of King Pet Raja of Ayuddhaya period more than 400 years ago. King Rama I the Great of Bangkok period had enlarged the Temple. Then King Rama III had very much enriched the Temple during 1832 – 1848 in the honour of his grand father Rama I. He established the Temple as the cradle of education or university for the Thai public at large. Many inscriptions on many subjects had ordered to inscribe in the walls of halls of the Temple by the King. Now Thai people understand that this is the most extensive Temple in Bangkok and above all it is the Temple in the honour of King Rama I.
The Committee hopes that the Seminar in the mist of beautiful Buddhist architecture, Buddha images, objects of worship, historical, cultural and educational information center will bring about the appreciation of national wisdom heritage and the Memory of the World Programme of UNESCO.
